This is the all-new SUV from Volkswagen called Taos. The 2022 Taos will arrive late next spring or summer and will be manufactured in the Puebla Mexico assembly plant where the current Jetta is produced. VW has done a good job of coming to market with unique sizes in the SUV world. The Atlas is on the large size of the mid-size class, the Tiguan is one of the largest in the compact utility market and this all-new VW Taos will also be larger than the competition, slotting between the latest batch of small SUV, and the compact utilities. It is slightly larger than the first-generation Tiguan but has more interior room, thanks to the MQB platform, longer wheelbase and better packaging. The design isn’t earth shattering but Volkswagen has made a lot of fans by producing understated vehicles that age well, this certainly has design elements from other VW utilities plus the Golf and Golf Sportwagon. Power comes from a new 1.5-litre version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine currently found in the Jetta sedan. The new engine makes 158 horsepower, up 11hp, and 184 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission in the front-wheel-drive model, but most models in Canada will feature 4MOTION® all-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission. In the new small SUV space this Taos will have some of the best horsepower number and the fact there is a conventional automatic and not a CVT will be applauded by many. The inside also has class-above interior features like an available digital instrument cluster. The dash has a gloss black panel across the front that will need to be experienced to see and feel what it is like. It’s a good sign that the 8-inch infotainment screen has real volume controls and buttons, something missing from the next generation Golf. This new infotainment screen will also feature wireless app connectivity for Apple and Android plus support wireless charging. The materials look like what we have come to expect from Volkswagen with a simple and clean design, like the outside that will age well. This might be a glimpse as to what we can expect from a new Tiguan one day, time will tell. So, the power from the engine is strong, the interior looks good but it is the space that really sets this Taos apart from the competition. Compared to the already large Tiguan, this new Taos has only 45L or just 1.6cu ft less cargo space than a 2-row Tiguan. That’s impressive. The Taos is available with standard cloth seats, leatherette, or real leather plus available push-button start, keyless access, an 8-way power driver seat, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats. So Volkswagen has removed the Golf and Golf Sportwagon from the upcoming lineup and replaced it with another SUV. Enthusiast will still be able to get Golf GTI and Golf R but this is what people buy, utilities. It looks like the rest of the family, has more room than most and more power.
